Phone Line Wiring

The wiring or home telephone service also known as pots or analog is fairly simple.

You will have a wide variety of telephone jacks to choose from but the wiring for a single line phone service will be standard. Telephone wiring for a phone outlet is typically either 1 2 or 3 pairs 2 4 or 6 conductor. You should disconnect the main phone line from the source before continuing wiring a phone jack. Keep in mind that the colors of the telephone wiring in your home will be typically one of two types or insulation colors.

The kind of wire shown above has recently become obsolete. If you need to run more lines than just 2 you may want to use a 6 strand or higher. If you have one with the new color code the whiteblue and bluewhite terminals are the first phone line. 2 the second pair of terminals either yellow and black or whiteorange and orangewhite is the second phone line.

All of the cat 5 wire ive seen uses the following color coding. The telephone wire should connect just like the company phone lines connector attached to the network interface device box. There will be a small box with a phone line going in and coming out. Strip some cat5 cable start with white blue and blue and punch down the top wire.
